Overview

Light affects human health and well-being much more than we realize. More and more research supports that lighting in the hospital can affect mood, sleep, and pain and ultimately healing. During our most recent project at Nemours Children’s hospital in Orlando we incorporated layers of lighting strategies in this LEED Gold facility. The solutions arose from consultation with hospital stakeholders, including practitioners, administrators, parents and children.

Goals

Children’s hospitals often include the latest in medical technology, as well as dynamic, kinetic, soothing and engaging designs that support the emotional needs of patients, their families and care staff. Children deal with a wide range of fears and anxiety during a hospital stay - fear of separation from their family, having shots and finger sticks, having to stay in the hospital for a long time, and being told that something is wrong. Integrated design features that promote wellness, comfort and distraction are key. They help alleviate fear and promote positive outcomes.

Process

Nemours Children’s Hospital showcases new technology, state of the art equipment, innovative building materials, color changing lighting and interactive features. Folded ceiling panels resemble filtered light patterns of tree canopies. Interior spaces strategically harvest daylight. Floor to ceiling windows and color changing LED lighting provide patients with garden views and contribute to the ever-changing colorful mosaic of the building’s façade. Garden water features create a captivating atmosphere of sound, shape, aroma and movement. The design of this sophisticated evidence-based facility and surrounding grounds will allow children and adults alike to rediscover the timeless wonders of nature that continue to stimulate the senses and inspire holistic healing. Many stakeholders contributed to and collaborated on the overall design of the Nemours Children’s Hospital, including patient-care-team consultants Bowen & Briggs, associate architects for hospital interior design P W, landscape designers AECOM (formally Glatting Jackson), civil engineers Harris Civil Engineering, structural engineers Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, mechanical electrical plumbing and fire protection consultants TLC Engineering for Architecture, lighting designers CD M and Traxon Technologies.

The CODAworx Manifesto

  • Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
  • We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
  • Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
  • In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
  • Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
  • The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
"Leave good footprints." -Ellen Kochansky, artist
